About Artist
STATEMENT:
Angela Morris-Winmill (born 1969) is a self taught figurative artist with a diverse portfolio developing in painting, sculpture and fashion art.
A career in Fashion Design developed Angela’s strong eye for colour and detail, making her transition to working as a full time Artist a natural and liberating decision.
Themes relating to women in society, their representation and internal expectations (being emotional and physical) run consistently through Angela’s work. Angela’s passion for fashion history and precision cutting are noted in her sculptures and paintings. How we are mirrored to society, expressing ourselves with feminine and masculine strengths are drawn from history and personal expression. Pheasant, skulls and bone are used as symbols of strength and domination.
Angela's sculptures are a skeletal representation of fashion history. Constricted female torsos from the later half of the 18th century are presented as semi taxidermy 'Hunted Women' in steel and pheasant. The first of these sculptures titled ‘Blood and Stone’ was shortlisted for the RA Summer Exhibition and exhibited at The Threadneedle Prize, Mall Galleries, 2012.
Angela's paintings are a guilty pleasure of dripping seduction. Powerful, erotic and sexually free. Female forms show a carefree animalistic attitude. Angela’s style and themes are consistently developing. Influenced by pop art, Angela reworks limited palette in her own signature style.
Angela’s sculptural ‘Hunted’ collection was shown at TriSpace Gallery London, (January - July 2014, Associate Artist). These works led to a collaboration with photographer Sebastien Pons (showcasing millinery and wearable sculptural pieces) titled ‘Hunted’, producing a successful and exciting shoot forming the basis of several paintings. Angela’s next collaboration with Pons titled ‘Meatmarket’, will be a humorous look at ‘Butchery meets Marie Antionette.’ This will include corsets and gowns produced by Angela with embroidered details outlining the ‘cut of a woman’. A new collection of paintings will develop from the background work before the shoot to working from staged models from the shoot.
Angela has recently joined the platform ‘www.artupclose.com’, by invitation of Artifact Gallery, New York where her paintings will be supported in a years’ Art Marketing Strategy Programme beginning at Spectrum Art Fair, Miami. (December 2014)
Angela is pleased to announce her three week Solo Show with Artifact Gallery, New York, to take place August 2018.
